Mazda Shuffling Around its Production. Leaving Michigan

Mazda 6 - US Version 1 photo

After announcing its collaboration with Fiat, Mazda seems to be going through a rather thorough process of restructuring and rethinking. Having started production of the US version of the Mazda 6 in 2005 at the Flat Rock plant, in a joint effort with Ford, the Japanese manufacturer will move production of the 6 (destined for all the world markets, including the US) to Japan.
Despite moving production, Mazda will keep its 50% stake in the Flat Rock production facility. The capacity void left by the 6 will be used up to produce more Ford Fusion models, following Ford’s announcement of a €441 ($555) million investment in the plant, in 2011. The Flat Rock factory has also been the place where the Ford Mustang is produced, ever since production was moved there from Dearborn, Michigan, in 2004.

With the introduction of a new 6, in 2014, Mazda would have probably needed to do some retooling of the Flat Rock plant anyway, so it’ll probably be much easier (and cheaper) for them to do it back home, in Japan.
