The Mazda MX-5 is well known for its sporty spirit, but the Japanese roadster could use some extra muscle. This is exactly what British Mazda tuner BBR though and so the company released an engine upgrade for the vehicle.
Called the Super 180, this is suitable for Mk3 / 3.5 MX5s produced from 2005 onwards. The 2.0-liter engine, which returned 158 bhp on the dyno, received an extra 22 hp and now produces 179.8 bhp (at 6,800 rpm). As for the torque, this was boosted by 27 Nm (20 lb-ft), to Nm (159 lb-ft), coming at 4,250 rpm, 750 rpm lower than in the stock car.
Here are the ingredients of the BBR Mazda MX-5 Super 180 pack:
• BBR stainless steel 4 into 1 exhaust manifold
• BBR 2.5 inch stainless steel exhaust centre section with high flow metallic sports cat and centre silencer
• BBR stainless steel rear silencer with adjustable 3.5 inchBBR branded tailpipes
• High flow BBR performance panel air filter in standard Mazda airbox
• BBR StarChip ECU remap
BBR brags that it has placed a special emphasis on keeping the sound in a reasonable area, but the company also offers a Supersport version for those who want an aggressive voice for their engines.
In addition to this, BBR offers a similar power upgrade for the 124 bhp 1.8i SE versions of the Mk 3 / Mk 3.5 Mazda MX-5.
