If there's one sportscar that's always been bullied throughout recent history, that has to be the Miata, with the tiny size and overly friendly appearance of the NA (first generation) making things even worse. As a result, it's not difficult to imagine not too many people trust these Mazdas in the event of a crash.
Nevertheless, the Na Miata in the image above proved that things aren't always what they seem. As you can see, the poor MX-5 now rests in car heaven, but the important thing is that the Mazda saved the life of its owner.
We're talking about a stock Miata with 57,000 miles on its odometer, which means this vehicle would've had plenty of motoring thrills to offer, had it not been T-boned by a Jeep.
To make matters worse, the Jeep, a second-generation Grand Cherokee, hit the sportscar after running a red light.
Given the low stance of the Miata and the high ground clearance of the Grand Cherokee, the Jeep climbed the Mazda, flipped and landed on its roof.
"Based on where the Jeep was in the street, I think it drove up the side of my door to where the hood is popped up and flipped over the hood," the Miata driver said when describing the crash on Reddit.
The Mazda guy explained he escaped the accident with minimal injuries and we have reasons to believe the roll bar, as well as the canvas roof-required chassis bracing, had an important role here.
Regardless, this crash should serve as a reminder for us all to always check your surroundings when setting off from the traffic light.
While this Miata obviously won't return among us, some of its parts, such as the wheels, will probably end up helping other MX-5s keeping their owners happy - yes, Redditors are already asking the driver about selling certain bits and pieces of the car.
