Mattel has plenty of special releases coming up this month. I've already shown you some of them. But we're also planning on a video release so you can get a close-up view of these collectibles.
With each passing day, I am more interested in Matchbox products. I especially enjoy the Moving Parts series, but there are plenty more cool cars to consider. Some of you may have spotted the Opel Kadett Super Chase in Mix K, although it may take some time to arrive in stores. The Collector Series is coming along nicely, especially if you like older cars.

Mattel debuted new castings like the 1970 Oldsmobile 442, the 1974 Toyota Celica GT Liftback, and the 1969 Audi 100 Coupe S. But I knew we could still expect more exciting releases over the next few months. And you won't have to wait too long for the first one. The 1993 BMW E30 M3 is next, launching on July 11, 2024, at 9 AM PT.

If you have been reading my stories, you may remember seeing a sneak peek in late March. So, I was surprised to see one with a Shell livery in June. Yes, it had an opening hood, but I have mixed feelings about the wheels it sported, although it was nice to have matching colors on the car. The item we're looking at here will be available shortly at Mattel Creations.

And I'm curious to see how long it lasts before it sells out. The Mercedes-Benz SLR McLaren I showcased recently is still available, but that's not quite as iconic as this '90s M3. Once you move past the fact that the hood doesn't open like in the real world, you see the four-cylinder engine inside. It doesn't provide nearly as much power as a modern M3 engine, but the E30 is also a lot lighter.

Anyway, the Superfast MED 2-piece wheels are just what this car needs, although I would have expected something a bit more special for an item like this. You get True Grip tires at this price level, but the same is true for the Shell version, which is slightly cheaper. The main benefit of buying this car is that it comes packaged in an acrylic case with a decorative outer box.

But maybe I'm missing the point here. Don't get me wrong, I'd still want one in my collection. However, the temptation to pay twice as much for a Solido 1/18 replica of BMW's hero car is strong. I wonder if Matchbox Collector's items will come in limited numbers, as we had in the Hot Wheels Red Line Club. That may affect RLC sales, but it could also improve Matchbox results. Mattel would win more people if it used opening doors on these special machines alongside the opening hood.
