Maserati has submitted paperwork to the NHTSA to start a recall campaign in the USA. The Italian automaker wants to repair the rear suspension of 26,464 cars manufactured between February 1, 2013, and September 18, 2015.
According to the NHTSA website, the premium carmaker has discovered that a rear tire-rod was improperly tightened to the hub carrier assembly.
The issue affects certain MY2014-2016 Ghibli and Quattroporte sedans. Maserati has not specified which engine versions were fitted to these models with the potential problem.
For the time being, it is unclear whether the European variants of the same cars will be subjected to the same precautionary safety action.
As Maserati explains in the recall filing, the improperly tightened attaching bolt on the hub carrier assembly could allow the tie-rod to separate from the above component. If this situation arises, the driver could lose control of the vehicle and be involved in an accident.
Maserati has not mentioned any knowledge of any accidents or injuries related to this potential issues. All vehicles that are suspected of being affected by this problem will be checked in authorized service facilities of the Italian automaker.
If the technicians discover that the bolts were improperly tightened, they will be refitted and assembled to specification. However, if the rear tie-rod or hub carrier assembly were damaged because of the improperly tightened bolt, Maserati will replace the part as necessary, free of charge for the owner.
The brand's representatives will notify all known owners of 2014-2016 Maserati Ghibli and Quattroporte models that are suspected of having this issue. Since this recall is announced by the NHTSA, we are only talking about cars sold in the United States of America.
The Italian automaker expects to begin this recall campaign on the first day of July 2016. Owners of these two models of the mentioned model years can contact Maserati customer service at 1-201-510-2369 if they have any questions.
