When it comes to racing heritage, Maserati have built a pretty little nest egg for themselves, and to celebrate the 20th anniversary of their return to competition (happened in 2004 with the MC12), they decided to unveil two special series MC20 supercars.
First, a bit of a history lesson. The MC12 was initially unveiled as a road car back in 2004, before work began on the GT1 car. Much like the original Boss Mustangs, the MC12 road car was developed to homologate the race variant, of which three units were entered into the FIA GT championship with great success – wins started to come straight away.
The MC12 GT1 took 27 victories in the FIA GT Championship between 2004 and 2010, including three 24 Hours of Spa wins, six Teams’ titles (with Vitaphone Racing), five Drivers’ titles, and two Constructors’ titles.
Now, these two MC20 special series cars, dubbed the Icona and the Leggenda, are here to pay tribute to the MC12 and will be offered in a limited edition of 20 units each, featuring special liveries and even exclusive content inspired by the aesthetics of MC12 Stradale and MC12 GT1 Vitaphone, respectively.
Let’s start with the MC20 Icona. Its livery mirrors that of its 2004 predecessor, the MC12 Stradale – itself a tribute to the Maserati Trofeo Light from its 24 Hours of Daytona days, a car that was actually inspired by the Birdcage Type 61. A livery within a livery within a livery. It’s like Inception, except with colorways instead of dreams.
Anyway, there are several features from the carmaker’s Fuoriserie Personalization Program included in the MC20 Icona, starting with the Bianco Audace Matte and Blu Stradale exterior. Meanwhile, you’ve got the Fuoriserie logo itself in Bianco Audace on the side of the livery, while the Italian flag was carefully positioned on the door, right underneath the MC20 lettering.
Other noteworthy highlights include the chrome wheels, silver hubcaps, blue calipers and the carbon fiber engine cover.
As for the MC20 Leggenda, it’s rocking a Nero Essenza and Digital Mint Matte livery (like that Vitaphone Racing MC12 GT1 car), to go with the trident wheels in Nero Lucido with Nero Opaco and Trident Digital Mint hubcaps. Then there’s the Trident logo in yellow (grille, doors, C-pillar), and a set of black calipers.
You can also find ‘Icona. Una di 20’ or ‘Leggenda. Una di 20’ on the cover of their respective Nettuno engines.
Then there’s the interior. Both vehicles boast lightweight 4-way monocoque racing seats, which happen to be in Nero/Blu on a silver background for the MC20 Icona, and Nero on a silver background for the Leggenda. Both come with the same sound system too (the Sonus faber unit), as well as the carbon fiber interior package, an E-LSD system (electronic limited-slip differential), plus a whole bunch of other neat goodies.
No word on pricing and/or market availability just yet.
