Mahindra will launch the highly anticipated Thar jeep on the 21st of the this month at its Kandivali facility. The company has stated that the fans' response to the 4×4 has been so great, that the Thar CRDe will be launched tomorrow. Several media reports were already predicting an end-of-December launch of the Thar Jeep-lookalike, which attracted a lot of attention at the Delhi Auto Expo this year. The launch will take place at Mahindra’s Kandivali facility where the Thar is being manufactured.
Conceived as a purely recreational vehicle, the new Thar uses the same 2.5-liter CRDI engine found in the Bolero, offering 105 hp and 247 Nm (185 lb-ft) of torque. Using a 5-speed manual transmission and a Borg Warner Manual Shift transfer case, the Thar promises exciting off-road action.
According to the company, the Thar has an approach angle of 46 degree and a departure angle of 30 degree with 200mm (7 inches) ground clearance, so it clearly means business when it comes to off-roading. But this is no stripped-out spartan vehicle, as it comes as standard with luxury features like air-conditioning, power steering, independent front suspension, as well as stabilizer bars that guarantee limitless off-roading.
On the outside, the Indian 4x4 keeps its masculine, square jaw signature look, which has been a favorite among its owners. The Jeep-like round headlights and its signature style slotted grille make for a bold statement at the front. A range of four colors is being offered by the company: Mist Silver, Arctic White, Toreador Red and Black.
