Lewis Hamilton’s commitment to all things environment-related is not new, but he’s living up to his reputation as a champion for a cleaner, healthier planet.
The 4-time Formula One world champion is now on vacation on the Greek island of Mykonos and he’s using his time there to highlight an issue close to his heart: plastic is killing our planet, as is our irresponsible disposal of it.
Hamilton spent 2 hours on a beach on the island, collecting plastic, garbage and debris. He showed his fans and followers the results in an Instagram video, while also urging them to spread the word and do their bit.
This might look like a small gesture in the grand scale of things, but if every one of us did the same, it would make a difference. Hamilton says he and Topshop heiress Chloe Green and her fiance, Jeremy “Hot Felon” Meeks collected 20 garbage backs of debris by the time they were done.
“I'm in just one of so many beautiful parts of the world today when we stumbled across this mess,” Hamilton writes on social media, in a caption to a longer video.
“We couldn't stand by, we had to do something. We all need to act, we must stop supporting companies that are blindly fixated on their profits at the expense of our beautiful planet and its environment,” he adds. “Please don't buy plastic. Please always recycle, we can all make a huge difference through the actions that we take every single day! Tag three friends so we can get this message out there #environment #change”
His message is clear: don’t buy plastic, whether that means bags, toys, straws or bottles. Dispose of all waste responsibly and recycle. And act whenever you’re in a situation of the kind he found himself in, by lending a helping hand to clean up the mess that’s killing our planet.
