Having dominated the muscle car class for quite a while now (the Mustang is the only pony car currently on sale), Ford has decided there might just be room in the family for additional body styles.
You see, the Blue Oval has already experimented with the Mustang Mach-E. This electric crossover has nothing in common with the real Mustang besides the name. If everything goes as planned, then the lineup might expand with a sedan.
We kid you not, as Ford's chief, Jim Farley, recently hinted at such a model. The head honcho used words such as "exploring" other body styles, like a four-door sedan, which would need to "possess all the performance and attitude of the original."
Thus, if it happens, it should retain the DNA of its coupe and convertible siblings, utilizing the same platform and packing the same engines. It is unclear whether the S650 Mustang will ever go down the hybrid route, but a new partially electrified powertrain is in development at Ford, and it is widely believed that the rumored four-door variant might use it.
It seems like a smart move, as the hypothetical Ford Mustang Sedan would go against the all-new Dodge Charger Sedan, which is offered with ICE and EV power. General Motors also appears to be interested in reviving the Camaro, probably as a four-door model, and this one will supposedly launch with electric firepower.
These are some very big plans for Ford, and as you can assume, the rendering crowd has already jumped on the rumor to imagine what a potential four-door Mustang might look like. We've seen digital illustrations of such a ride a few times, and Kleber Silva recently expanded it with a few CGIs that portray the model with a very unexciting stance.
Due to its proportions and rather big ground clearance, the mid-size sedan looks off, especially its front three-quarter design. The face was clearly lifted from the S650 Mustang, and so was the tail, which is decorated by the GT emblem in the middle of the trunk lid. Such a move would suggest the presence of the Coyote V8 engine under the hood.
However, the pixel manipulator refers to this model as being a hybrid, in a clear reference to the aforementioned rumor, yet even if Ford launches an electrified four-door version of the Mustang, it is possible that it won't pack the eight-cylinder unit, but the 2.3L EcoBoost four-banger.
Now, not everyone would be into a longer Mustang with a hybrid four-pot under the hood, especially if it ends up looking similar to the one in these renderings. But would you be willing to buy one instead of the coupe/convertible and get a more spacious interior?
