The sixth-generation Chevrolet Corvette production has officially ended after the last model rolled off GM's Bowling Green, Kentucky, assembly line.
The last production C6, a white 427 Convertible featuring a 7.0-liter V8 engine from the Z06, will be sent to Detroit to take possession of a well deserved spot in the General Motors Heritage Collection.
As for the Bowling Green plant in Kentucky, the workers won't have too much time on their hands - just two weeks actually - as they're getting ready for the production of the 2014 Corvette Stingray and the consequent $131 million facility retooling.
"There’s been a great deal of anticipation as we get ready to build the Stingray," said plant manager Dave Tatman. "But it’s been pretty much all business here. We added in the 427 convertible and the 60th anniversary edition, and built more cars this year than in the past few years and did it in a model year that was three months shorter. We’ve been on overtime this entire model year."
Some 215,000 units of the C6 Corvette have been completed since 2004, including ZR1 and Z06 versions. The King is dead. Long live the King!
