For a car maker that is not in the mainstream of car sellers, reaching the 250,000th unit produced milestone is a feat worth mentioning. For Land Rover, the achievement is even more important, taking into account all the pain and sorrow of the year that was 2009.
The British auto maker announced on Monday it has produced the 250,000th Freelander 2, four years after the model began rolling off the assembly lines in Merseyside. The model that will go down in history as the anniversary model is a 2.2l TD4 Diesel GS, painted in Fuji White. The car will be shipped to Scotland, where the customer awaits it.
"This milestone achievement and the increasing sales for Freelander 2 highlights just how important this vehicle is, not just to Halewood but also for the regional and UK economy − around 70 percent of Freelanders produced at Halewood are exported overseas,” said Richard Else, Halewood operations director.
“I'd like to thank our flexible and highly skilled workforce and congratulate the Halewood team on this superb achievement."
The Freelander 2 is experiencing a great deal of success these days, with the numbers showing a 22 percent increase in sales, from April 2010 to February 2011, compared to the numbers of the same period last year.
The SUV is currently offered in either 2WD or 4WD configurations and is available with two power versions of the same 2.2l engine: 90 hp SD4 and the 150 hp TD4. The Freelander 2 comes equipped with all the technologies required for a model to be declared a successful off-roader.
