Braking on snow and ice, even in cars fitted with ABS is still tricky, because if there isn`t any grip to begin with, the electronics are rendered useless. So, some crashes can be avoided by not braking at all, and by just staying focused and not panicking.
In this video, the driver of the car with the dash-mounted camera is driving along at around 40 km/h, and the driver discovers that as he is approaching a bend, the car begins to understeer on the snowy road. However, instead of trying to get the car back in line, by gently pulling the handbrake, while veering hard to the right, he just panics and brakes, further accentuating the car’s natural tendency to pull wide.
Sadly, a Gazelle light truck was coming the other way, and its driver was unable to go around, so they collide head-on. The car driver could have avoided this altogether, or at least minimized the damage, by crashing into something else. Braking is what ultimately caused this crash (and probably not-so-good tires), and the driver’s lack of skill/experience really showed here.
