The boss of Kia’s California design studio has in mind to produce a small rear-wheel drive sport coupe as a response for Toyota’s GT86.
At the New York Motor Show this year, Tom Kearns said “yes” when asked if he thought Kia should make a sports car to help push the emotional appeal of the brand.
"We'd definitely make one if we had my way," he said, leaving it to be understood that this was a personal opinion and not a company one. "Something like a Scion FR-S (the US version of the Toyota GT86) that's youthful, fun, affordable and rear-wheel drive would be great."
A small two-seat Kia coupe would fit perfectly along with the parent company Hyundai’s four-seat Genesis Coupe, and the BRZ/FR-S competitor would also give Kia an air of sportiness, giving enthusiasts another option for a drifting car.
