In my search for off-grid living machines the market has to offer, I encounter countless campers who promise to be the next best thing. However, the Big Red doesn't just make promises; it keeps them. Time to dive into a machine that only Australians can get their hands on.
Folks, from the first moment I saw the Big Red, I knew that we'd be in store for a treat. I mean, just check out that exterior, with its molded caps, aluminum walls, walkable roof, and tandem axle capability. That last one tells you a whole lot about just when and where you should be using this thing: anywhere, really, and we're here to find out how and why this travel trailer may be worthy of simply moving down to Australia and leading a new life.

Now, the idea behind the Big Red lineup is to offer future owners and outdoor lovers a "long-range touring" unit that can handle the Australian landscape. Suppose you've ever watched a nature show about what that landscape is like. In that case, you know that in order to stand a chance of selling out there, campers basically need to be bulletproof; not just keep out critters and crocodiles, but the elements too, especially sun and sand (earth). Well, that's exactly what New Age Caravans (NAC), the crew behind this model, has created.

Overall, three floorplans are available under this lineup, but to give us an idea of what it has to offer, I've chosen to take us through a short tour of the least expensive unit, the proverbial "bare-bones" package. Although, you're about to find out what NAC's idea of a baseline model really is.

For starters, NAC uses a chassis from long-standing partner Walkinshaw. This chassis has been given CNC attention and is supported by a Rocker Roller Springs suspension from Al-Ko. Sure, it's not the most capable suspension on the market, but you'll be fine if you stick to manufacturer guidelines. That shell's then raised using aluminum composite cladding.

While I'd normally head inside at this point, the fact of the matter is that the exterior of the Big Red is filled to the brim with features and goodies. For starters, take a look at all the storage lockers tattered all over the lower half of the shell. It's here that we find access to systems like a 110-liter (29 gals) water tank, pumps, and batteries. Did I mention the massive pass-through storage bay and access to 200 Ah of battery power or roof-mounter solar panel?

Now, Australians are big lovers of the outdoors, and nearly any unit you buy out there has an outdoor cooking station, but the Big Red is not on that list. All we get is an outdoor picnic table, but with a bit of extra cash, you can easily get an outdoor cooking center fired up. NAC throws in the awning and LED lighting so you can continue living outdoors, be it day or night.

With an idea of what the exterior has to offer, it's time to head inside, and this is really where the Big Red surprised even further. While units with corrugated exteriors don't always carry the most attractive interiors, New Age has made a name for itself by offering would-be owners modern interiors that feel like a home, not some cramped and damp cellar on wheels.

Since the 19-ft Ensuite layout, the smallest of the bunch is, well, smaller than the rest, NAC relied on a neat trick to help expand the interior while out in the wild, or some park: a slide-out; the main bed is set up on this feature and with it, a walkway is created that lets you explore this unit from the front, where a four-person dinette is found, through the kitchen, past the bedroom, and all the way to the ensuite bathroom, from where this floorplan gets its name.

Yet, what I like most about the living space of this home on wheels is the simple yet premium look and feel it brings; that cabinetry is flawless, countertops run endlessly, lighting of every kind illuminates your habitat to your liking, and all the comforts of home are in place, including a washing machine.

Actually, for the remainder of our time together, kick back for a moment and picture yourself in possession of this camper. Feel the cool breeze of the morning running through your hair as you enjoy a cup of coffee with your significant other under an awning and overlooking the horizon. After the sun breaks, hop on your e-bikes and explore the local landscape.

Later on, come back home and get ready for the evening activities. Be it grilling something up and attracting all the local wildlife, including other humans, or just camping out under a sky full of stars and not the impenetrable haze of city lights. Oh, and when you're sick and tired of the same scenery, hitch this baby up and ride off toward the sunset.

The question is, just how much are we expected to drop on this rolling home? As you're aware, a lot of an RV's price is dependent on the features in store, but as an idea, New Age Caravans is showcasing an MSRP of $99,300 Australian, which is roughly $66,200 American. If you're a digital nomad picking up an American salary and can afford to live in the Land Down Under, what are you waiting for?
