Jeep representatives have announced that the Wrangler SUV is likely to get a diesel engine in the US starting 2015.
"Wrangler is on the radar to get (a) diesel,” Jeep President and CEO Mike Manley told WardsAuto. “Remember we’re also going through the product change of Wrangler for 2015-16. That will probably be the right time to introduce the diesel into that vehicle."
While the Jeep Wrangler is already available with a diesel engine in Europe, US will get the Grand Cherokee SUV, the Ram 1500 pickup and the 2014 Ram ProMaster van with diesel options.
"I’m confident that the Grand Cherokee will show just how large a demand there is for diesel, and I think what that will do is reinforce the need for us to target Wrangler as a vehicle that can take a diesel," added Manley.
In other news, Chrysler is having trouble with its factories keeping up with the demand for Jeep Wrangler in the US.
