Jeep is pondering adding a seven-seat SUV to its range three years after the Commander was discontinued. The new vehicle might revive the iconic Grand Wagoneer nameplate which was used until the early 1990s.
According to Autocar, the future Grand Wagoneer, which is not expected to arrive earlier than 2015, could be underpinned by the same platform used for the three-row Dodge Durango SUV. The idea is not actually new, Jeep thinking about a new Grand Wagoneer since 2011 and reiterating the idea at the 2012 Geneva Motor Show.
Jeep’s last seven-seat SUV, the Commander, was built between 2006 and 2010. Sold in more than 80,000 units in 2006, Commander sales slumped to only 12,655 examples in 2009 and just 8,115 vehicles in its final production year.
In other related news, the 2014 Cherokee’s production has been delayed for about a month, while the company has celebrated its one-millionth Wrangler JK built at the Toledo plant in Ohio.
