The increasingly stringent C02 emission regulations could cause Jaguar to ditch V8 engine development, a company representative said earlier this week. However, such a move won’t come into force until the brand manages to deliver similar performance from units smaller than the current 5.0-liter V8.
"We are not wedded to V8s. Can Jaguar exist without a V8?. The answer is yes, but is it our intention at this stage to eliminate the V8 from our engine pallete? Clearly not because we need it for our performance. When we have the technology that delivers intelligent performance at the same level will we even consider such as move,” Jaguar product and marketing director Steven de Ploey told Drive.
“Moving forward, the pressure is higher on improving emissions and we are already addressing to current trend of downsizing engines such as replacing our naturally aspirated V8 with a 3.0-litre supercharged V6,” he continued, adding that Jaguar could also give up on supercharged engines in favor of turbocharged ones.
So, what happened over at Jaguar lately? We really can’t tell. But we do know we had a whole lot of fun with the V8-powered Jaguar XKR.
