As precise as a Swiss watch. That is how the Mercedes-Benz G-Class is when it goes off-roading. Swiss luxury watchmaker IWC Schaffhausen must know it. That is probably why they made two special edition watches inspired by the range-topping Mercedes-AMG G 63.
These are the IWC Schaffhausen Big Pilotss watches inspired by the robustness and performance of the G-Class. To show the connection with the off-roader, the luxury watchmaker reflects the iconic elements of the G 63 in the newly introduced timepieces, with the list including the round headlights and the spare wheel cover mounted on the tailgate.

Both the Big Pilotss Watch and the G-Class saw the light of day as purely functional items. They had to be easy to use, robust, and uncompromising. Over the years, they both evolved into icons in their own domains.

The Big Pilotss Watch AMG G 63 sports a case and crown made of 18-carat Armor Gold, a contrasting black dial, and a black rubber scrub with microfiber inlay. The black-gold color combo found inspiration in the exterior paintwork and interior finish of the G 63 Grand Edition, unveveiled back in June. The Amor Gold is a new alloy with improved microstructure, which makes it more wear-resistant than the conventional 5N gold. The timepiece displays a combination of sand-blasted surfaces and polished edges.

The other special edition Big Pilot's Watch AMG G 63 example is the first IWC timepiece to feature a ceramic matrix composite (CMC) case. Engineered in partnership with the German Aerospace Center, the fibers of the composite material are embedded in a matrix of ceramic, making the watch very damage-tolerant.

CMC components are also insensitive to thermal shocks. That is why they are used in all kinds of high-requirement applications, from aerospace to the manufacturing of brake discs for sports and luxury cars.

The dials display a small second counter at 9 o'clock, opposite from the one positioned at 3 o'clock, as they both imitate the round headlights of the G 63. The black dials embossed with a relief-like technical structure found inspiration in the air intakes of the performance off-raider.

A Mercedes-Benz three-pointed star logo shows up on the tinted sapphire glass back to echo the badge on the spare wheel case mounted at the rear of the G-Class.

Both special edition watches are available through the IWC boutiques and on the webpage of the Swiss luxury watchmaker. They are both eligible for the six-year extension to the standard two-year International Limited Warranty.

IWC Schaffhausen and Mercedes-Benz have been partners for almost two decades. Furthermore, the Swiss luxury watch manufacturer is one of the main sponsors of the Mercedes-AMG Petronas Formula One Team, and both drivers, Lewis Hamilton and George Russell, wear the brand's timepieces during races.
