As it turns out, Tesla's first-ever pickup truck is a hit. Despite its many drawbacks and high price, in Q2 2024, it outsold the Rivian R1T, the Ford F-150 Lightning, and the Chevrolet Silverado EV. It seems that the Texas-based marque's bet is paying off. People like the triangle on wheels. But that doesn't mean experienced mechanics like Scotty Kilmer won't give it a brutally honest review.
If you don't know who Scotty Kilmer is, then you're either young or found some other mechanic-turned-YouTuber who helped you discover the automotive realm and everything that it entails. Essentially, he was among the very first to give netizens free car advice. Tens of millions have seen what he had to say.

But because he's so well-versed in this domain and due to his numerous pretentiously titled videos, most people have forgotten that Kilmer was a legend. It's also true that many chose to ignore the content creator. However, nothing has stopped the mechanic from sticking to a strict uploading schedule.

In one of his latest videos, Scotty Kilmer discusses the hottest pickup truck of the moment – the Cybertruck. Tesla put the triangle on wheels into production and started delivering it late last year to very lucky and enthusiastic customers who agreed to pay $20,000 over the nearly doubled MSRP.

Since then, we have learned that the Cybertruck has its fair share of shortcomings. However, people don't care about those things. Most enjoy driving it, while others are putting it to good use by inviting their curious peers to try them out. For some, the EV pays for itself.

The opinion you've been waiting for

Even Kilmer was asked to pay for the chance to review one, but he refused. Instead, he accepted a charity's proposal for an ad. Yes, the Cybertruck you're about to see below is being given away. Someone will win it.

But despite having to agree to an ad, Kilmer didn't hold back. Right from the get-go, he called the battery-powered pickup truck with a bullet-resistant body, rock-proof glass, and a water-resistant tonneau cover "the most ridiculous thing he has ever seen." He also pointed out the sharp angles, which are a consequence of the design and the stainless steel panels.

The mechanic thinks that the vehicle will be hard to fix outside the automaker's service network and criticizes its low ride height. It's important to note that the Cybertruck has an air suspension system (and a wade mode!), which means its ground clearance can be adjusted based on the driving mode or at the push of a touchscreen button.

Kilmer is also unhappy with the weight of the EV and claims that it can be felt when decelerating. Again, we must tell you that the Cybertruck has adjustable regenerative braking. One-pedal driving can be a tricky thing to master at first, but anyone will get the hang of it in a short amount of time. The motors go in reverse and put electricity back into the high-voltage battery, which can generate an unnatural feeling the first time you experience it.

The mechanic-turned-YouTuber is also unhappy about the generous windshield, which, apparently, costs $2,500 to replace. The Gigawiper is another thing that made him giggle and remind everyone about the recall for the motor.

Not quite an expert take

Unfortunately, the mechanic didn't study the pickup truck before getting his hands on it. In the video below, he confuses the backup gear shifter with the main one. In theory, the Cybertruck can automatically find the right gear. But when it doesn't, there's a virtual gear shifter on the screen. The one between the sun visors is there to use only when the main touchscreen doesn't work.

Still, Kilmer continues and underlines that the steer-by-wire system is noisy and too sensitive. He also doesn't like that the vehicle doesn't absorb the road bumps all that well despite its large tires and air suspension setup.

The model he shows off in the footage is a dual-motor 600-hp Cybertruck. For those who have more money and want more power, there's the tri-motor Cyberbeast available. But you may not want to spend more for a better Cybertruck. Kilmer believes that two motors are doing a very good job. He's so convinced about it that he even says the ride is "too fast for its own good."

The man briefly touched on the towing capacity and said that the range wasn't stellar. Many tests have proven that the Cyebrtruck's drivetrain isn't very good for trailering. But, besides the Silverado EV RST or 4WT, which all-electric pickup truck is? The existing EV technology isn't helping anyone go far with a small battery.

Ultimately, the mechanic also pointed out that Tesla resorted to a minimalist cabin and disliked the fact that there are no stalks and everything is done through the main screen or via the few steering wheel buttons.

It seems that Scotty Kilmer isn't ready to abandon an internal combustion engine-powered Toyota just yet.

Car shows on TV and his father's Fiat Tempra may have been Florin's early influences, but nowadays he favors different things, like the power of an F-150 Raptor. He'll never be able to ignore the shape of a Ferrari though, especially a yellow one.
