Finland is a special place, which, despite most of its border being with Russia, couldn’t be more different. It is a stereotype (albeit a positive one) that Fins can and do drive rather well, while having a lot of fun doing it. Sweden isn’t far off, in terms of being renowned for good driving, but they are a bit more European and a bit less ‘Nordic’ than the Fins.
They have taken karting, the simplest form of motorsport, and they’ve adapted it to their frozen environment with stunning results. They fit the go-karts with studded tires and remove the plastic bumpers, thus concluding their preparation for racing. Then it’s off for an extremely entertaining (sideways) race on what appears to be a a frozen lake. This seems to us like a huge amount of fun - and it definitely is.
If it were up to us, we’d really like this to gain popularity and we’d definitely like to try drifting a go-kart on ice as it is the epitome of simple driving fun. It's cheap, fun and with small engines, relatively safe, even for kids to get into non-track-based motorsport.
