Decades from now, when the automotive world will be nothing like the one we see today, the history books will have a special chapter dedicated to i. And that chapter, for all intents and purposes, might be called just like that: i Was Born on February 21, 2011.
Because it is on Monday, February 21, 2011, when German auto maker BMW will introduce to the world their newest, and possibly the most successful of their future brands: i. For BMW, that simple letter will stand for all of the electric vehicles BMW will produce from now on, starting with the technology already previewed for the Megacity vehicle.
The German auto maker announced officially on Friday that the naming of the new brand, as well as some additional details, will be announced on February 21. Although not naming the brand just yet, the press release was titled “i can’t wait – the new sub-brand from BMW,” pointing to the car maker's commitment to continue the legacy of its Project i, the division in charge with electrifying BMWs.
As said, most of the details surrounding the first i model are already known: the first production model in the world to combine an electric drive with a carbon fiber body will be built on an aluminum chassis and a platform called Life-Drive which will hold the batteries, electric motor and management system.
autoevolution will come back on the subject on Monday, when the full details surrounding BMW's push into the electric market, the i brand sector, will be revealed.
