Hyundai has just announced that its second-generation Genesis luxury sedan has managed 100,000 sales in a period of only 18 months since launch. The achievement comes 10 months sooner than on the previous model, suggesting brand recognition has risen a lot.
On a market-by-market basis, over half of the models sold come from South Korea, where the Genesis is like the national limo. 52,661 units never left home, while 53,254 sedans were exported. That means that in total, 105,915 units were moved by the end of May 2015.
The first-generation Genesis was launched in 2008 and sold 250,000 units until late 2013. With the all-new model, Hyundai has introduced a new, sharper design language. Prototypes were tested at the Nurburgring instead of just regular roads and the first all-wheel drive system was launched.
The Genesis is the eighth Hyundai to achieve this milestone, after the Sonata, Elantra, Excel, Santa Fe, Accent, Tucson and Tiburon. However, it's the first luxury model to reach 100k sales. The Genesis Coupe is about a year from its debut and work is they are targetting the Audi A5 market. The future of the Genesis could also include the first-ever premium SUV.
“Reaching this global sales landmark so quickly demonstrates Hyundai Motor’s technological expertise and success at positioning the brand as a credible producer of premium vehicles,” said Wonshin Chang, Executive Vice President and Head of International Operation Division of Hyundai Motor Company.

The US market
The car company says the new Genesis is particularly popular in America, where it's the number three best selling model in the midsize luxury segment. Prices start at $38,000 for a rear-drive model with the 3.8-liter V6 GDi and jump to $51,500 for the Tau 5-liter V8.
