The Hyundai Ioniq 5 N TA (Time Attack) Spec did a record-breaking climb at Pikes Peak, achieving the best time for the Electrified Modified and Production SUV/Crossover categories. Hyundai threw three cars up the mountain at the Pikes Peak International Hill Climb.
The electric crossover competed in stock and TA Spec forms. Both versions achieved record times in their categories, exceeding all expectations, including those of the people involved in the project.

One of the two Ioniq 5 N TA Spec won the exhibition class as it was clocked at 9 minutes and 30 seconds. Meanwhile, the production Ioniq 5 N followed with an impressive 10 minutes and 49 seconds.

All three Hyundai-branded cars that went up the mountain in Colorado share production spec power electric systems with additional Pikes Peak-specific software that brought along an additional 36 horsepower (37 metric horsepower) to maximize performance.

Unveiled last month at the Nurburgring, the TA Spec rides on 18-inch Yokohama ADVAN A005 slick tires.

The challenging course runs along 12.42 miles (20 kilometers), ascending over 4,700 feet (1,438 meters) to the summit of Pikes Peak. The cars have to make 156 turns, have to face unpredictable weather, and figure out how to store energy in high-altitude conditions that can affect both drivers and vehicles.

Hyundai World Rally driver Dani Sordo drove one of the Ioniq 5 N TA Spec, finishing the Race to the Clouds in 9 minutes and 30.852 seconds. Meanwhile, Randy Pobst, on board the second TA Spec, took 9 minutes and 55.551 seconds for the same run. Pobst replaced four-time Pikes Peak overall winner Robin Shute.

The Ioniq 5 N TA comes with minor software tuning that increases the output of the motor, but it also gets some high-performance part chances. It is equipped with new shock absorbers, motorsport-spec brakes, and slick tires. Other than those, the Ioniq 5 N TA is identical to the production Ioniq 5 N version that customers can order and drive on public roads.

Ron Zaras drove the Ioniq 5 N production model at Pikes Peak. Zaras is a rookie of the International Hill Climb. However, he did well, winning the category he ran in, as he completed the climb in 10 minutes and 49.267 seconds.

Hyundai originally planned to take four cars up the mountain in Colorado. However, Paul Dallenbach, who was expected to drive the other production car, was not able to participate in the race. He broke a leg and fractured his back following a crash during a practice run.

Hyundai Motors first participated in the Pikes Peak International Hill Climb back in 1992. Rod Millen set the best time in the 2-Wheel Drive Showroom Stock category, crossing the finish line in 13 minutes and 21.17 seconds behind the wheel of a Hyundai Scoupe.

The automaker's motor racing division also had reasons to celebrate in 2012 when a Hyundai Genesis Coupe, driven by Rhys Millen, set a course record of 9 minutes and 46.164 seconds.
