Yesterday, I visited six or seven toy stores, looking for Hot Wheels or Matchbox collectibles. It was a successful adventure, as I found the Audi 90 Quattro Super Treasure Hunt! It's my third one in ten years!
I am as immersed in the Hot Wheels universe today as I was with Star Wars for most of my life. While I'm not fond of the new direction the series has gone in, I will always enjoy the first six episodes. Yes, I said it: the first six episodes. I know that series fans older than me don't necessarily agree with the prequels. But I thought it fascinating to witness the story of Darth Vader before becoming one of the galaxy's most feared villains (I hope that's not a major spoiler for you).

Episode I: The Phantom Menace is still one of my favorite movies. I was about the same age as young Anakin when it first aired, and I loved the whole concept of pod-racing! That's just one of the highlights of that movie, as Darth Maul's battle with Qui-Gon Jin and Obi-Wan Kenobi is equally as exciting. Star Wars is teeming with starships of all shapes and sizes. The Millennium Falcon is one of the most iconic ones, but who can forget the Tie Fighters, the Imperial Destroyers, and, of course, the Death Star?

If you're a Hot Wheels collector, you may well be aware that Mattel has bridged the gap between car enthusiasts and starship lovers with several series. For instance, the Star Wars Starships series has been around since 2015, and you'll find all your favorite space-wandering vessels there. Then there's the Starships Select line, which takes things to the next level but is also more financially demanding.

I wasn't even aware that Mattel had developed a replica of Jabba's Sail Barge until recently. With the San Diego Comic-Con coming up next month, I have already shown you a few interesting Hot Wheels products that will be available soon. The Batman six-pack set was my favorite so far, but something else caught my attention, too.

Seeing that the Phantom Menace is celebrating its 25th Anniversary this year, it's only fitting that Mattel decided to highlight one of the coolest ships in that movie: Queen Amidala's Royal Naboo Starships. Some of you may be aware that designers drew inspiration from the Lockheed SR-71 Blackbird for this ship, and I feel that's one of the coolest pieces of machinery humanity has ever built, even after all these years.

Chris Colangelo designed the casting, and it's the first time we're seeing it in the Starships Select series. It comes in a diorama packaging showing Qui-Gon fighting Darth Maul on Tatooine. You need to show some patience, though, as the collectible goes live on July 25, 2024, at 9 AM PT for $30. With a limit of two items per customer, I imagine it will sell out in less than ten minutes from launch, and I'm keen to add one to my collection!
