Honda’s fully electrified mainstream range for Europe will soon get reinforced by the returning Prelude nameplate - we'll see it first at the Goodwood Festival of Speed between July 11 and 14. As a reminder, the Japanese automaker surprisingly revealed its future intention to bring back the beloved Prelude nameplate late last year during October's Tokyo Mobility Show when it introduced the appealing Prelude concept, a hybrid prototype.
The initial speculations ran rampant because everyone thought it was a little and affordable EV model, but it turned out that Honda imagined it as a hybrid – a model that would compete with the Toyota GR86 and Subaru BRZ or the Mazda MX-5 Miata RF but with the added advantage of low driving emissions. Naturally, everyone and their mother eagerly await for regional confirmation – the company brought the concept to the United States but remains mum on details regarding availability.
As it turns out, though, Honda's European fans need not worry about it. Honda just marked "25 years of pioneering hybrid success" with the announcement regarding the impending European debut of the Prelude concept and the nameplate's return to the Old Continent. The public reveal will take place at Goodwood FoS, where it might go up the hill for a rolling preview, and the Japanese automaker redressed the prototype in crimson for the reveal that its fully electrified mainstream range will soon include the series-production Prelude in the region.
The original Prelude arrived in Europe no less than 45 years ago and acted as a "high-performance showcase of Honda's cutting-edge technology for five generations until 2001." Now, the newly reborn modern interpretation "is set to deliver the perfect balance of exhilarating driving pleasure and outstanding efficiency." Unfortunately, though, the Japanese automaker is not releasing new details about the concept.
"The new Prelude not only marks the latest chapter in our ever-evolving hybrid story, it is also the product of 25 years of pioneering hybrid research and development. Ensuring this model maintains its 'sporty' DNA by perfectly blending the efficiency and environmental advantages of electrified driving with an exhilarating experience behind the wheel – liberating users from their daily lives with increased driving pleasure, says" Tomoyuki Yamagami, Chief Engineer and Large Project Leader, Honda Motor.
Instead, they are bringing to Europe a new Prelude concept (or the same) dressed in a vibrant red paint that contrasts nicely with the subtle carbon fiber body kit and the black 20-inch alloy wheels that have crimson brake calipers from Brembo tucked behind them. Additionally, Honda celebrates 25 years of hybrid powertrains, as the Insight coupe was Europe's first mass-produced hybrid model back in 1999. Nowadays, the entire family is electrified, with Jazz, Civic, HR-V, ZR-V, and CR-V models featuring e:HEV powertrains as standard.
