High-End OVP Camper Van Is Perfect for Deluxe Off-Road, Off-Grid Adventures, Now for Sale

Overland Van Project, also known as OVP, is a Milwaukie, Oregon-based company specializing in building bespoke camper vans that promise comfort and versatility. It makes both semi-custom and fully custom conversions and has a vast portfolio of builds from which you can take inspiration.

One of their latest rigs is the Big Blue, a 2023 AWD Mercedes-Benz Sprinter van with a 170" wheelbase converted into a mobile home. It comes with a new and improved Mazama layout, one of the company's floorplans, which can comfortably accommodate four people in terms of seating and sleeping.

The vehicle sports a 2.0-liter, inline 4 diesel engine outputting 211 hp and 332 lb-ft. (451 Nm) of torque. What's more, it's paired with a 9-speed automatic transmission. An under-mounted 45-gallon (170-liter) fuel tank from S&B Filters extends the range from the standard 200 miles (322 km) to almost 400 miles (644 km).

Although its AWD capabilities enable you to go off the beaten path, OVP wanted to make the rig even more off-road capable. One of the most significant upgrades is a 2-inch lift, thanks to a King suspension kit. Moreover, the rig rides on 32.5-inch BFGoodrich KO2 all-terrain tires. On the passenger side, you'll notice a Molle panel holding a shovel and an axe, as well as traction boards, also mounted to a Molle panel. In between these two, OVP installed a ladder. Another notable detail is a surfboard mount.

Climb on top of the vehicle, and you'll find a Safari roof rack from Tannerack holding four Pelican cargo boxes, a Fiamma manual awning, and front lights. Interestingly, OVP mounted solar panels directly on top of three boxes, while the fourth one houses a Starlink antenna. This setup allows for more room for walking on the roof.

At the front, you'll notice a Backwoods bumper complete with lights, dual recovery points, and a winch. Finally, at the rear are two vertical bike racks from Owl Vans. Slide the main door open, and you'll discover a sleek, aesthetically pleasing living space with a custom dark walnut ceiling and many neutral colors paired with some black and grey elements, like the matte lower cabinetry and the fixtures. Furthermore, OVP opted for an open layout, meaning the driver's cabin isn't separated from the living space.

Dead ahead of the entrance, you'll find two Scheel-mann seats, both mounted to JMG swivel bases. The company also added two additional Scheel-mann swivel seats for the driver and passenger.

Above, you'll notice two sizeable overhead cabinets with recessed LED lights. Moreover, behind the seat on the driver's side, there's a small counter integrating a tiny but deep stainless steel sink.

Next, we have the kitchen, located on the driver's side of the interior. It boasts a dual-burner induction stove, a slide-out fridge/freezer, and a decent amount of storage space via four drawer and an overhead cabinet.

On the side of the overhead cabinet, OVP added a control panel for this camper van. It comprises a Victron touchscreen display with controls for the power system, switches for the water pump, lights, and more, as well as an AquaHot touchscreen display controller.

Opposite the kitchen, OVP devised a wet bathroom. It's quite spacious, measuring 32x24 inches (81x61 centimeters), and features a shower, a Thetford toilet, a soap dispenser, and a Nautilus self-cleaning door.

Finally, we have the lounge/sleeping area at the rear. This rig comes with one of my favorite bed setups when it comes to camper vans: an elevator bed above and a lounge area underneath.

Why is this arrangement so effective? Well, a bunch of people can fit on the couch. If guests want to spend the night inside the van, you can transform the lounge area into a bed by connecting the two side benches and rearranging the cushions. Then, you can lower the elevator bed to your preferred height and still leave room for guests to sleep underneath.

Having an elevator bed means you don't have to set it up every single time you want to go to sleep. You don't even have to make it – just raise it all the way, and it's hidden away from sight. By the way, you'll find the controls for the bed inside the cabinet above the kitchen.

The lounge gets plenty of natural light through two hatch windows, one on each side. Of course, if that's not enough and the weather allows for it, you can open the two rear doors to get a lot more light and a breeze inside. Other notable elements in the lounge area are two reading lights and USB ports.

To make things even better, the rear part of this rig has heated floors, so you won't have to worry about your feet freezing in colder environments. In the opposite case, a Nomadic Cooling ceiling A/C will keep you nice and cool. According to OVP, you can run it on High for about 15 hours and 25 hours on the Eco setting.

An AquaHot system provides all the heating inside this van. It enables you to set the temperature for both the hot air and the floor heating systems, and you can choose to run it via diesel or electricity, although the latter should be used only when connected to shore power.

How about the utility systems? Having such a finely designed interior without proper off-grid capabilities would be a pity. Luckily, OVP didn't hold back on adding superior systems to this rig.

Both the plumbing and power systems are hidden in the lounge's benches. The power system's highlights are 915 Ah batteries, a secondary alternator, a 3,200 W inverter, and a charge controller connected to the 150 W solar panels on the roof. What's more, the plumbing system consists of a 30-gallon (114-liter) freshwater tank, an outdoor shower, and an under-mounted 11-gallon (42-gallon) greywater tank.

All in all, OVP created a fully equipped, finely designed tiny home on wheels ready to handle whatever off-road, off-grid adventure you throw at it.
