GP2 Asia Series Cancel Round 3 in Bahrain

The GP2 Asia Series was relying on Bahrain to host rounds 2 and 3 of this year's championship. Instead, both have been canceled, as confirmed by the series' organizers via a statement on Monday.

Last week, in the wake of violent clashes between anti-government protesters in the Kingdom and the local police (which resulted in 3 dead and several injured), the second round of the GP2 Asia Series, scheduled to take place near Manama on the Bahrain International Circuit, had been canceled.

Today, only hours after it was announced that the Formula 1 season opener was also canceled, the GP2 Asia series issued a press release in which they confirm the cancellation of the 3rd round also. Bahrain was supposed to host both round 2 and 3 of the championship, following the season opening action in Abu Dhabi.

We are very sad to see Bahrain removed from this season’s calendar. It is always a great pleasure to go there where we have been cordially welcomed with professionalism since 2005. We are looking forward to going back there soon,” said GP2 Series CEO Bruno Michel.

The interesting part is that the GP2 Series did not announce whether the series will move elsewhere for the 3rd round, which was scheduled to go down during the F1 race in March, or not. In the latter situation, the entire 2011 GP2 Asia Series would come down to only one race, the one in Abu Dhabi, as the entire calendar was comprised of only these 3 races.

Just to make sure we get the results right, ART's Jules Bianchi is currently leading the drivers' classification after Round 1 with 11 points, followed by Romain Grosjean and Davide Valsecchi.
