Let's say you own an electric car - maybe you do - and are now heading to work to do the day's bidding. However, there's a bit of an issue: you rarely catch a spot at the old electric pump and you're already at 35% capacity as you forgot to recharge the night before. What to do?
Honestly, I know quite a few EV drivers who have found themselves in a situation similar to this one day in and day out: biting their fingernails as they watch the battery gauge drop mile after mile because they forgot to recharge their car the day or night before.

Well, we can say goodbye to this scenario for good because here's GoSun with their latest invention or project, the EV solar charger, a device that achieves exactly what its name implies: recharging your EV with nothing but good old and free solar energy.

Yes, people, we finally have a device that will recharge your EV, hopefully, no matter the make and model, and does so no matter where you are: as long as there's sunlight, GoSun's EV Solar Charger is there to provide you with up to 30 extra miles (48 km) of driving each day off just the power of the sun alone. Honestly, I kind of knew this day would come, but no one really knew who would make the first move.

Frankly, I'm not surprised to see GoSun as the brand behind this amazing new trinket. After all, this crew has been harnessing the power of the sun for years. We've even covered their outdoor gear, including their solar cookers and travel trailers.

As for what we're in for this time around, GoSun seems to have surpassed itself in every way so far, having raised over $1M in orders for this charging solution. It's clearly on its way to popping up on people's cars as early as 2025. Be sure to check local rebates and government incentives as they might be eligible for a 30% Federal Tax Credit, according to GoSun.

Overall, the Solar Charger comes across as nothing more than a roof-top glamping tent, so the design is rather sleek and doesn't disrupt your vehicle's aerodynamics in some massive way. Best of all, you don't even need to unravel the entire contraption to take advantage of this tool's abilities. As it lies closed, the Solar Charger processes 200 W of juice.

But the charger's true magic and power are only seen once you're able to open its proverbial wings. If there's space and the neighborhood allows for it, you can lift the top half of the shell to reveal a series of other panels that lie hidden from view; unravel them onto your car and watch 1,200 W of solar cells stick it to the man!

Oh, and clearly, things aren't as simple as just tossing any old solar panel onto your vehicle and hoping it does the trick. To ensure that you don't start a fire of any kind, all the energy processed by the cells is first stored in a lithium-iron-phosphate battery in order to "buffer solar intermittency." Oh, and a big plus for the EV Solar Charger is the fact that it meets all EVSE Level 1 charging protocols, and that's all we really know so far. The whole system also weighs no more than 70 lbs (32 kg), so you should be able to install it on your own.

Now, all that sounds amazing, and it absolutely is, but there's just so much more to this story than we could ever imagine. After all, this sort of setup opens up some insane horizons for EV owners, and we're going to go through a couple just so you can grasp the depth of what GoSun offers here.

Let's say you own an EV and are an avid explorer or camper. One of the issues with glamping in an EV is the lack of a recharge source in the middle of nowhere. Well, you now have one. Just make sure you're parked in a sunny area, unfurl the panels, and let them work their magic for the next few days. Once it's time to go, you'll be able to reach that first pump with ease.

Then, there's the idea of tapping into as much free solar power as possible while living in the city. All you have to do is leave this puppy unraveled on your car in your driveway, and every couple of days or so, take a free 100-mile ride, thanks to good old Ra himself.

Suppose you have solar panels on your house and are already routing power from the sun to your EV; good for you. This sort of system is also priceless in an emergency situation where you may have run out of juice just miles away from a charger; no need to call a tow truck anymore.

Honestly, there are countless uses for this thing, and that's exactly how GoSun planned the whole thing. All you need now is $3,000, part of which is a refundable deposit of $100, and a tad of patience until next year. I'm thinking 2025 is going to be a wild time for EVs.

PS: This isn't the first system to explore this idea, but it is one of the newest. If you know of any others, feel free to comment below.
