The Colorado entered its third generation in 2022 for the 2023 model year with underpinnings derived from the second generation. Although the midsizer is well into the 2024 model year, mistakes can – and will inevitably – happen.
6,130 units of the 2024 Chevrolet Colorado and 2,492 units of the mechanically similar 2024 GMC Canyon are believed to have been produced with a fuel pump lock ring that may not be fully locked. The supplier of the fuel tank assembly is Plastic Omnium of Kansas City, whereas 85689520 is the part number of said tank. Said ring secures the fuel pump to the fuel tank.

Be it Colorado or Canyon, it holds 21.4 gallons of dinosaur juice, meaning 81 liters in the metric system. This fuel tank is used across the board, for the Colorado and Canyon both come with a single cabin-wheelbase combo. The mid-size trucks feature crew cabs bolted onto a frame with a 131.4-inch (3,338-millimeter) wheelbase.

Plastic Omnium informed General Motors of the loose ring condition back on March 18, 2024. Containment efforts were promptly initiated at the supplier's production facility and at the automaker's Wentzville assembly plant in Missouri. Other than the Colorado and Canyon, said assembly plant is also tasked with making the Chevrolet Express and GMC Savana vans.

The supplier ultimately determined that a machine used to engage the lock ring was misaligned in the period between February 19, 2024 and March 18, 2024. Due to partial engagement of the lock ring, fuel spillage is possible after a high-speed crash.

Given the aforementioned, it's hardly a surprise that GM's recall population for the 2024 Chevrolet Colorado and GMC Canyon features production dates beginning with February 20, 2024. According to the Detroit-based automaker, the cut-off date for said trucks is May 9, 2024.

Dealers have already been instructed to inspect and – if necessary – lock the ring as intended. Owner notifications, however, will have to wait until August 13 or later. Those who are somewhat anxious upon reading this piece can easily determine if their midsizers are recalled or not by entering the vehicle identification number in GM's Owner Center or on the NHTSA's portal.

The 17-character VIN should begin with 1, followed by G and C. For example, 1GCPTDEK3R1166155 in the case of a 2024 model year Colorado currently located in Pennsylvania and 1GTP6DEKXR1160196 for a Canyon listed for sale in the state of Oregon.

Equipped with 2.7-liter turbo I4 engines, the Colorado and Canyon are listed by their respective brands with starting prices of $29,500 and $36,000, respectively, sans destination. Their most basic of specifications are WT 2WD for the Colorado and Elevation 2WD for the Canyon.

Regardless of the engine's tune or the trim level you pick, all trucks come with an eight-speed transmission from the Hydra-Matic 8L family. At the other end of the spectrum, the most off-road-capable and expensive grades available are the Colorado ZR2 Bison and Canyon AT4X AEV Edition. As for towing and payload capacities, the max ratings are 7,700 and 1,710 pounds, respectively, as in 3,493 and 776 kilograms.
