What do the Chevrolet Blazer EV, Silverado EV, Cadillac Lyriq, GMC Hummer EV SUV, and Sierra EV have in common? The answer is Ultium drive and battery systems, and the other answer is recall number 24V-320 comprising only a handful of electric vehicles from the aforementioned marques.
Back in April, a quality engineer at General Motors identified an issue with a drive unit stator assembly. More specifically, a line operated somehow failed to apply the insulating varnish to a number of assemblies. The suspect drive unit stator assemblies may have been used in the production of 10 battery-electric vehicles produced for the United States.

According to General Motors, the subsequent investigation revealed that shoddy insulation could result in wire-to-wire contact within the stator. This, in turn, leads to a sudden loss of motive power, therefore increasing the risk of a crash. The largest automaker of the Detroit Big Three is not aware of any incidents related to the described problem.

Containment efforts were initiated on April 10, and remedy drive units feature properly manufactured stator assemblies. The supplier of the stator assembly is LG-Magna of Ramos Arizpe, Mexico, whereas the affected stator assemblies are referred to as X77, X79, X80, and X81. The stator assembly bears part number 24054340 in the parts system.

Dealers have already been instructed to replace suspect drive units at no charge whatsoever to the owners, while owner notifications will be mailed on or about June 24. The affected population was produced between February 28 and April 12 to the tune of one GMC Sierra EV, one Hummer EV SUV, two Chevrolet Silverado EVs, three Blazer EVs, and three examples of the 2024 Cadillac Lyriq.

Because it's nigh-on impossible to determine when a given vehicle was produced, owners are left with two choices: either wait for the notification letter to arrive or enter the 17-character VIN on the automaker's recall portal. The VIN look-up service is free of charge. Alternatively, owners can run the identification number on the NHTSA's website.

Of said zero-emission vehicles, the Chevrolet Blazer EV is the most affordable. Based on the BEV3 platform of the Lyriq, the Chevy starts at $48,800 at the moment of reporting as opposed to $58,590 for the better-equipped Caddy. Highlight figures for the Blazer EV include up to 324 miles (521 kilometers) of range and eight years or 100,000 miles (nearly 160,000 kilometers) of limited warranty for the high-voltage battery.

The Cadillac makes do with 314 miles (505 kilometers) for the single-motor setup, whereas the dual-motor Lyriq is good for 307 miles (494 kilometers) on a full charge. As opposed to the BEV3, the BT1 electric truck platform underpins the Chevrolet Silverado EV, GMC Sierra EV, and the off-road-oriented Hummer EV SUV. Both the BEV3 and BT1 are skateboard-type platforms.

GM finalized the pricing for the Silverado EV RST First Edition in April 2024, with said configuration starting at $94,500 (sans the $1,895 destination charge). The Sierra EV Denali Edition 1, by comparison, is $97,500 (before the $1,995 freight charge). As for the Hummer EV SUV, make that $96,550 plus $2,295 for the dual-motor 2X e4WD.
