General Motors has recently announced a recall of more than 50,000 Cadillac CTS models due to rear suspension issue. According to an official press release, this is due to the fact that a number of nuts that are part of the rear suspension could become loose, resulting in an unstable ride.
The recall, registered under the 11029 number in GM’s books, involves 2009-2010 model year cars, that may experience an inboard or outboard turning for the rear wheel if the problem is not rectified. This sounds like a serious issue that needs to be rectified as quickly as possible.
According to GM, the problem is created by the wax coating on the rear suspension toe link jam nuts, which may cause them to loosen. In the worse-case scenario, the toe link could separate altogether, resulting in the inward and outward turning of that rear wheel. Naturally, this would lead to a loss of control over the direction of the vehicle, increasing the risk of an accident.
A clanking noise should be heard by the driver before that even happens, warning him of the impending disaster. Fortunately, no injuries or death have been reported yet.
The issue will be fixed free of charge, by dealers instructed to either clean all wax residue from the rear suspension toe link and install two new jam nuts, or by replacing the rear suspension toe link altogether.
So far, GM has not released a notification schedule, but owners can contact Cadillac at 1-866-982-2339 or the GM Owner Center at www.GMOwnerCenter.com regarding the issue.
