According to Autonews, workers from the aforementioned car brands are going to have a day of action on Thursday to show their dissatisfaction with GM's decision to save $1.2 billion in Europe this year. The Detroit automaker earlier announced that the company might decide upon the closure or spin offs of several its European factories.
To make themselves better understood, the European Metalworkers' Federation (EMF) has urged the US automaker's 55,000 workers at Opel, Vauxhall and Saab to join their protests on the announced day.
"The European employees of Opel/Vauxhall and Saab need a sustainable and viable future for their companies in Europe," the EMF explained in a statement.
Certainly, they are right in their demands, but GM is currently facing serious financial problems. What's more, it has also announced its intention to invest in environmentally friendly, dynamic and innovative vehicles. Obviously, it needs money to achieve this specific purpose and consequently, they have to cut down costs during the global recession.
More importantly, the Detroit-based automaker has already asked European Governments for help by giving it loan guarantees or by taking stakes in the car company.
"The solution to the crisis is strong European co-ordination by all stakeholders," the EMF said.
And because bad things always come in packs of at least two, GM's dying Saab has filed for court protection on Friday and the Detroit car maker will have to throw a lifeline to the Swedish brand as well. But this will be the last helping hand GM will give to Saab as it announced it will not keep the Swedish brand beyond January next year.
