GM CEO Says Volt Is an American Symbol

General Motors CEO Dan Akerson is again making the headlines, this time talking less about the Volt's rivals and more about Chevrolet's recently launched product. Referring to the Volt, Akerson said the car "reinforces how important American innovation and creativity is to the auto industry," as reported by AutoObserver, emphasizing that the technology used on the plug-in hybrid could be implemented into new models in the future as well.

No other details were provided however so, although it's clear that General Motors will use the systems available on the Volt for several other models in the future, it's still unsure when and on which vehicle it will actually happen.

Akerson also talked about the goof he made when calling the Prius a "geek mobile". The General Motors CEO explained that it was only a joke and he was surprised to see how many people actually took it seriously.

"We commonly refer to the geek-mobile as the Prius. And I wouldn't be caught dead in a Prius," Dan Akerson said in a statement earlier this year when talking about the Chevrolet Volt rival. "This actually looks good,” he described the Chevrolet vehicle.

As for the Volt, General Motors continues its aggressive marketing campaign to promote the vehicle. The company yesterday announced that it will use oil-soaked material from Gulf of Mexico to produce certain parts of the car, thus protecting the environment and reducing the impact the materials could have on the environment.

The plastic will be used for vehicle components, which are made of 25 percent boom material and 25 percent recycled tires from GM's Mildford Proving Ground vehicle test facility.
