It’s a shame searching on eBay and looking at the prices some people ask for a decent car. It’s also a shame when you think back of how these cars were perceived back when they were brand new. Nobody could’ve said that a BMW E39 540i could be sold for a mere $5,000 back in the late 90s. And yet...
We recently caught the V8 fever but we’re not all that into turbocharged plants. Oh no, we’re more accustomed and prefer naturally aspirated units that you can rev freely and not be surprised by the torque. You know, the simple pleasures of life.

There are a couple of beautiful such plants out there but for me, there’s one that has always been underrated and will forever hold a dear place in my heart: the M62 4.4-liter V8 from the E39 5 Series.

It might not look all that impressive today, when we have torque and horsepower coming out of our nose everytime we touch the gas pedal but somehow, I can’t get over it. It must have something to do with the car it was used in.

The E39 5 Series along with the E46 3 Series are my absolute favorite cars in BMW’s history. I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again. Therefore, it’s easy to understand why I’m in love with that engine.

That being said, I started looking online to see how much it would cost me to get my dream car: the E39 540i. As it turns out, not too much. Prices on eBay are either shockingly low or incredibly high, it’s a real confusing search.

For around $5,000 you can have a 1997 manual one if you’re not too picky and understand that a car of that age is going to need some TLC. However, get closer to $10,000 and you’re going to get one in really good shape like the one here.

Other offers go up to $15,000 or more and are usually sold by dealers or various resellers. It might seem like much but these offers usually involve pristine models that look absolutely incredible for their age. You can check some of them out in the gallery below.
