When life hands you lemons, you make lemonade. And when it gives you beer, you either drink it or sacrifice it to save your burning car, which is exactly what one German driver did.
This unnamed hero was driving on the Autobahn near the town of Hoesbach in Bavaria, when he smelled something “odd,” the New York Times reports. That something odd was smoke and it was coming from the engine of his car, as the man quickly found out when he pulled over and went to check under the hood.
He probably didn’t have to pop it open, because he saw flames coming out from under it. Either the driver didn’t have a fire extinguisher in the car, or he panicked and reached and grabbed the closest thing to him, but he ended up using several bottles of beer that he had with in to put out the fire. Sacrilege to waste all that beer, but he did save the car.
The report notes that he also alerted firefighters but “there was nothing left for them to do” when they arrived. The driver was able to put out the fire all by himself, thanks to the beer he had inside the vehicle.
The report doesn’t mention what brand of beer he used, so we’ll never be able to weigh in on the current debate on whether wasting it was worth to save the car. Neither does it say what car the man drove or, for that matter, the kind of damage it took in the fire.
But one thing is clear: this is one quick-thinking man anyone could use having around in case of an emergency. Jokes aside, though, do better than him. Every vehicle must have a fire extinguisher precisely for this type of situations, along with a first-aid kit, so make sure you're never caught off guard.
