People seldom consider they have enough space in a tiny home on wheels, especially if they've been used to living in a conventional home. However, with the proper setup, you can fit the right features even in a camper van with a shorter wheelbase, such as the one I'm checking out today.
There are many van models suitable for camper van conversions. The most premium option is the Mercedes-Benz Sprinter – it has made a name for itself as a reliable, high-quality, premium van. The one I'm discussing today is a 4x4 Sprinter 2500 with a 148" wheelbase.

By the way, if you're interested in the reliability of van models suitable for camper conversions, I wrote an article about this exact topic a few days ago.

Before I start the tour, let me tell you more about the creators of this camper van. Freedom Vans is a specialized conversion company based in Bellingham, Washington. The company is all about enabling its clients to enjoy a freeing, off-grid lifestyle through comfortable, well-equipped mobile homes.

As usual, I'll begin this tour with the van's exterior - there's not a lot to discuss. At the rear, you'll discover an Aluminess ladder. Up top, you'll find a roof rack holding 360-degree lights, an awning, and 390 W solar panels.

To be frank, I'm surprised Freedom Vans didn't install a suspension kit to increase the Sprinter's off-road capabilities – it's an upgrade many converters go for when dealing with 4x4 vans. However, it could also be that this rig's customers didn't want it.

Pop the main door open, and you'll discover a stylish interior. It boasts a black-and-white aesthetic complemented by what looks like laminate flooring and a beautiful wood ceiling. What's more, this rig has an open layout, meaning the driver's cabin isn't separated from the living space. That means you have a more open, spacious feel but lose some insulation and privacy.

There's a small storage compartment integrated into the floor, accessible from the outside of the rig. Right next to it, you'll find a table mount.

You'll notice the kitchen dead ahead of the entrance. It features a solid-surface countertop, a shiplap wall with a slide-screen window, a deep stainless steel sink, a 3.2-cubic-foot (90-liter) fridge/freezer, and an induction stovetop integrated into the countertop. In fact, it's not just attached to the countertop but hidden away inside it - typically, we see this feature more in conventional homes rather than in camper vans. Of course, you can still use the counter space when the stovetop is not in use.

For storage, you can use an overhead shelf, two sizeable overhead cabinets, one of which houses a microwave, and a drawer under the countertop. Moreover, you'll also find the rig's control panel up top with a heater controller and controls for the power system.

Underneath the sink, you'll find a control panel for the plumbing system. It consists of an on/off switch for the water heater, water gauges for the fresh and grey tanks, and a faucet for the shower. I'll tell you more about the latter in a bit. By the way, this rig is equipped with an under-mounted greywater tank and a 30-gallon (114-liter) freshwater tank.

Next, we have a seating area comprising two benches with a table in between. Moreover, if you want to accommodate guests, you can transform this spot into a bedroom by lowering the table and rearranging the cushions. However, it will only fit a shorter person.

Under the bench on the passenger side, you'll find a composting toilet, while the other one has storage underneath.

Smaller camper vans, such as the ones based on Sprinters with 148" wheelbases, usually don't come with a fixed bathroom. However, many people can't live without an interior shower, so Freedom Vans found a different way to install one.

The seating area's floor can be removed to reveal a shower pan. Then, you can attach a shower curtain to the ceiling, connect a hose to the faucet underneath the sink, and you're good to go. It's not the most comfortable setup, but hey, at least you have a shower inside.

Finally, we have a fixed bedroom at the rear. It's arranged to sleep you from side to side, with a mattress measuring 54 inches (137 centimeters) in width and 60 inches (152 centimeters) in length.

However, if that's not enough, you can extend the bed to a king-size by pulling out a frame and using the dinette's two cushions to fill the remaining space. Other notable bedroom features are a large flip-down shelf, a Maxxair fan, light switches, and charging points.

Like in other camper vans, the bed is positioned higher up to make room for a garage underneath. It comes with a huge slide-out tray in the middle, while the sides are occupied by the utility systems.

On the left side, you'll find the water system with the 30-gallon freshwater tank I mentioned earlier connected to a heater and an outdoor shower. The opposite side houses the electrical system. Its highlights are 600 Ah batteries, an inverter, and a solar charge controller connected to the 390 W solar panels on the roof – that's more than enough to power everything inside this camper.

All in all, Freedom Vans has managed to make the most of the compact interior space available in this van. You can learn more about its build and services on the company's website.
