One of the most important cars of the 2013 Frankfurt Motor Shows BMW’s i3, which has just been presented to the public. Nevertheless, we'll remind you BMW has previously made the global debut of the i3 in July, with this being the company’s first series production all-electric vehicle.
Power comes from an electric motor generating 125 kW (170 hp) and 184 lb-ft (250 Nm), being fed to the rear wheels through a single-speed gearbox. To lower the center of gravity, BMW placed the lithium-ion battery in the floor of the vehicle.
As for the question that sits on everybody’s lips, BMW promises a driving range of 81-99 miles (130-160 km), with the possibility to use a standard power outlet, BMW’s dedicate i Wallbox or a public charging station.
There’s also an optional range extender that comes in the form of a 650cc two-cylinder petrol unit. The engine, which delivers 34 hp, sits just next to the electric motor, above the rear axle. This doesn’t affect the luggage capacity, as its fuel tank sits in the front of the BMW i3. Thus, the i3 can gain over 60 extra miles (100 km) before having to refuel.
