Ford has unveiled the C-Max Solar Energi Concept ahead of its public debut at the 2014 Consumer Electronics Show (CES), which is scheduled to commence later this month.
Described as a “sun-powered vehicle with the potential to deliver the best of a plug-in hybrid without depending on the electric grid for fuel”, the C-Max Solar Energi user a solar panel roof, instead of an electrical outlet, to recharge itself.
The solar panel features a special concentrator that acts like a magnifying glass, which, according to Ford, gives the C-Max Solar Energi the same full charge as the production plug-in hybrid version after a day in the sun. This means a total range of up to 620 miles, 21 of which on electric power alone.
Ford says the C-Max Solar Energi Concept will be tested in numerous real-world scenarios, with the outcome to help “determine if the concept is feasible as a production car”. More details on the solar-charging car is available in the official press release below.
