The battle for the garages of the US law enforcement agencies is on, with Ford, Chevrolet and Dodge bumping heads to impress the brass with the order books. Apparently, Ford is a notch ahead compared to its competition, as least as far as speed and acceleration are concerned.
Currently being evaluated by the Los Angeles Sheriff’s Department, the Interceptor managed to achieve the fastest lap of the bunch and previewed a naught to sixty acceleration time of around 5.8 seconds. Aside for that, Ford says, the Interceptor impressed the police officers with its “stellar handling and performance.”
“These are purpose-built vehicles that we have developed with the support of police agencies across the U.S. and Canada,” said Kevin Koswick, director of Ford’s North American Fleet Operations.
“As the leader in police vehicles 15 years running, Ford is committed to remaining the nation’s largest provider of police vehicles. We’re offering law enforcement officials a portfolio of products that are purpose-built and deliver on our commitment of providing the safety, technology, durability and performance they need to excel at their jobs.”
The Interceptor draws its power from several engines. The backbone of the line is the 3.5l V6 Ti-VCT which delivers 280 horsepower. It is accompanied by the 3.5l V6 EcoBoost 365 horsepower and 350 lb.-ft. of torque and the 3.7l V6 Ti-VCT.
The new crime chasers won't be seen on the streets however until the end of 2011, when production of the current Crown Victoria Police Interceptor will end. Its biggest competitor will be the Caprice PPV.
