Ford Escape PHEV And Expedition Hybrid Coming In 2019

On today’s episode of “Things That Are Undeniably Obvious Enough,” crossovers and SUVs are very popular in literally all four corners of the world. The United States is arguably the most utility vehicle-savvy market, and Ford knows it all too well.
And with ever-stringent corporate average fuel economy standards, the Blue Oval is feeling the pressure to make its high-riding models more frugal. As per sources with knowledge of the Ford Motor Company’s product plan, four utility vehicles are in the pipeline with hybrid and plug-in hybrid powertrains.

Automotive News reports these are the Escape and Lincoln MKC plug-in hybrid, as well as the Expedition and Lincoln Navigator hybrid. All of them should debut in 2019 presumably for the 2020 model year at the latest. These fellows are just four of the 13 electrified vehicles Ford will introduce by 2022.

The highlights are the Mustang Hybrid, which will use some sort of EcoBoost internal combustion engine, as well as the F-150 Hybrid. Speaking of the latter, bear in mind that the Expedition and Navigator both rely on F-150 underpinnings. It’s unlikely the hybrid powertrains will be different between the upcoming models bearing in mind the similarities in terms of platform.

As such, look forward to what we already know from Raj Nair: 110-volt generator and no electric driving mode. As for the Escape and MKC in PHEV attire, Ford is already testing pre-production prototypes of the two models.

Nothing much is known about what sort of powertrain these compact crossovers hide under the skin, but don’t forget that both models share the Global C1 platform. The C-Max Hybrid rides on the C1 too, and even though it’s old by 2017 hybrid vehicle standards, the powertrain isn’t too bad.

Be that as it may, it would be best to expect a different powertrain combo from the plug-in hybrid variants of the Escape and MKC, packing more performance than what the antiquated C-Max Hybrid has to its name.
