The Big Detroit Three love to compete against each other on every level – including commercial vehicles. Arguably, though, Ford and Chevy have a more compelling 'professional' lineup than Ram.
The latter offers the HD models, the Ram Chassis Cab from $49k, and the Euro-style Ram Promaster from $44,405. Meanwhile, Chevrolet punches above it with professional-grade Colorado, Silverado, Silverado HD, Silverado 3500 HD Chassis Cab, Silverado 4500/5500/6500 HD, or the Low Cab Forward.
It also has a model that's reminiscent of the ancient atmosphere of the late 20th century, the Express Vans and Express Cutaway as the full-size series of minivans has been the successor of the G-series and in production without too many changes since 1995 over a single generation!
Ford, on the other hand, has an interesting mix of American and Euro-style pro models: Transit Connect, Transit and E-Transit, Transit CC-CA, as well as the Super Duty, Chassis Cab, F650, and F750, plus the E-Series Cutaway and Stripped Chassis. The latter are the leftovers from the full-size van series, also known as the Ford Econoline, Econovan, or Club Wagon, that was first introduced in 1961 and lived across four generations.
Well, there's a reason why we talked about the abundance of workhorses from the Big Detroit Three – someone has decided to do an entire series focused on them across the imaginative realm of digital car content creators. Jim, the virtual artist known as jlord8 on social media, loves messing around with all things CGI from GM and Ford, but his minivan love kicks in quirkily with a series titled "old vans with new grills."
So, after he worked on the Chevy Express 2500 panel van a few days ago to make it look like it married the 2024 Traverse SUV, he also brought back the beloved 'Astro' moniker for a crazy transformation of the 310-hp 2024 Chevy Colorado ZR2 mid-size pickup truck flagship off-roader into a stretched and distorted 'Astro Overland' 4x4 'minivan' with dual sliding doors!
But wait, don't start laughing, crying, or getting intrigued – depending on your POV – because there is more. Moving to Ford, the pixel master who loves both GM and the Blue Oval company just as much (he owns a 1986 Buick Regal T-type and a 2001 Ford F-150 SVT Lightning) has now created an even more compelling overlander – the so-called 'Ford Econoline E-350 Super XL.
Beauty is always in the eye of the beholder, and this virtual creation might not be everyone's cup of tea, even as the CGI expert married the E-Series looks with the DNA of the 2024 Ford F-150. More precisely, this Econoline features the front fascia of the $64,150 Ford F-150 Tremor, and it seems that it borrowed the off-road abilities of the Raptor if we judge the ride height, underbody protection, meaty tires, and wheels, plus the winch and front and rear bars. As for the overlanding capabilities, they're worthy of a 'super van,' right?
