Ford has announced that its Police sedan and utility vehicles have topped competition from General Motors and Chrysler in Los Angeles Sheriff Department tests at Fontana Raceway for the third straight year.
The Blue Oval-badged police cars, the Taurus based Interceptor sedan and the Explorer-based SUV, were fastest both in 0-100 mph acceleration testing and average lap times. Powered by a 3.5-liter V6 EcoBoost engine, the sedan accelerated from 0 to 100 mph in 14.2 seconds surpassing the Dodge Charger HEMI (15.2 seconds) and the Chevrolet Caprice (14.4 seconds), both of which come with V8 mills under the hood.
Moving over to SUVs, Ford’s EcoBoost Interceptor needed only 6.5 second to reach 60 mph from a standing start, and 18.3 seconds to get to 100 mph, while Chevy’s V8 Tahoe sped up to 60 mph in 8.5 seconds and to 100 mph in 23.6 seconds. The GM-built SUV was bettered by the non-EcoBoost Ford as well, with 0-60 mph at 7.9 seconds and 0-100 mph at 23.6 seconds.
Ford also posted the fastest average lap times around Fontana, with the Interceptor sedan being quicker than both its rivals with 81.25 seconds versus 81.97 and 82.19 seconds for the Chevrolet Caprice and the Dodge Charger respectively. In the SUV category, Ford’s EcoBoost won the battle with the Chevrolet Tahoe with 85.58 seconds to 91.71 seconds.
“Not only do we remain faster, but agencies like the Los Angeles Sheriff Department see the benefits of all-wheel drive and EcoBoost,” said Arie Groeneveld, Ford chief engineer. “In pursuit driving conditions, being able to put down 365 horsepower is best accomplished using our intelligent all-wheel-drive system – which optimizes handling and traction in all driving conditions, including dry-pavement surfaces – as demonstrated in LASD testing.”
