Ford recently announced that it is developing to develop multiple automated vehicle technologies, with the carmaker aiming to bring this kind of features to mainstream cars. The Blue Oval starts with an automated parallel parking system, which relies in the vehicle’s rear parking sensors to help the driver with the maneuver.
"Where there is insufficient space to complete the maneuver in one attempt, the system might ask the driver to shift the vehicle into Drive and Reverse as necessary," a company statement explains. "Once the vehicle is perfectly positioned, the driver gets a finish signal."
In addition to that, Ford is also preparing a feature called Traffic Jam Assist, which uses radar cameras to allow the car to keep up with those in front of it, and, in addition to what other active cruise control systems do, it will also offer automated steering control. Ford stressed the fact that the driver can override the system at any time.
The company didn’t offer any info on the release schedule for the systems, but did mention that the automated parking system will arrive in the near term.
