Downsizing is a process that’s taking over the automotive industry and there are certain carmakers that aim to take development to the stratospheric phase, with Ford being one of them.
Gunnar Herrmann, vehicle line director for the Focus, recently told autocar that the engine, which will develop up to 125 hp in its “normal” version, could be taken up to 180 hp. “It’s a stretch, but possible,” the exectuive said.
The aforementioned source mentions that Ford is expected to release a high performance version of the engine in the future, which could use an electric supercharger and a normal turbocharger, with the unit potentially being used in the go-fast versions of the Fiesta and Focus.
However, we don’t think that such a development is too likely. First of all, this is not necessary, as Ford already has a 1.6-litet Ecoboost engine which could be pushed further from the 150 hp rating it currently offers on the focus and secondly because the a twincharged engine would be an expensive solution, one that didn’t prove to have too much market success with VW’s turbo-supercharged 1.4-liter TSI unit (we are only talking about the twincharged version of the engine here).
