Scuderia Ferrari and Sauber F1 have extended their Formula One collaboration with a multi-year agreement that enables the Swiss team to use Ferrari’s new 1.6-liter turbocharged V6 power unit for the 2014 season onwards.
“Reaching this agreement consolidates our efforts with regards to Sauber, a team with which Scuderia Ferrari has collaborated off and on for many years,” Ferrari F1 team principal said in a statement.
Zurich-based Sauber F1 is using Ferrari engines since 2010, when Peter Sauber repurchased the team from BMW. Sauber will be the second competitor to use Ferrari engine in 2014 after Marussia, who signed an agreement with the Italians back in July.
Starting next season, Formula One cars will be powered by turbocharged V6 engines. The new more fuel efficient powerplants will replace the current V8 mills developed and delivered by Renault, Ferrari, Mercedes-Benz and Cosworth.
