Do you own a relatively new Dodge Durango, Ram 2500 or 3500? Keep reading if so, as your vehicle could be part of a recall that has been announced by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA.
According to the safety watchdog, the aforementioned high-riders from the 2022 model year must be taken back to the dealers, as they have faulty ESC (electronic stability control). We don't know if this problem has led to accidents and/or injuries, as the NHTSA hasn’t said anything about it.
A document released by the NHTSA reveals that the ABS (anti-lock braking system) module could disengage the ESC due to a software malfunction. If that happens, the warning light will inform drivers of the issue. The problem, which can cause a crash without prior warning, is blamed on the component manufacturer, ZF Group, and the fix is simple.
After scheduling an appointment with a dealer, authorized technicians will inspect the vehicles and update the ABS control module software. As usual, all work will be performed free of charge. If owners of certain rides have already fixed this issue independently, they will have to provide the original receipt and/or other proof of payment to the company, and they will be reimbursed.
The recall affects 211,581 vehicles in the United States, and the estimated defect percentage is 100%. The 2022 Dodge Durango, made from August 23, 2021, to December 9, 2022, is on the list, with 53,167 copies. Another 157,890 units of the 2022 Ram 2500, built between April 14, 2021, and December 7, 2022, are also on the list, alongside 524 copies of the 2022 Ram 3500, assembled from April 21, 2021 to November 25, 2022.
Concerned owners with questions about this recall campaign can reach out to the car manufacturer at 1-800-853-1403 using the recall number 55B. They can also contact the NHTSA's Vehicle Safety Hotline at 1-888-327-4236. Dealers will be informed of the problem on July 26, and that is also when owners of the faulty vehicles will be notified.
The car manufacturer has been aware of the issue since March 2, 2023, when it was informed of a potential issue related to the software condition of the ABS module. This component disabled the ESC on certain Durango, 2500, and 3500 vehicles. Subsequently, it conducted an internal analysis of the ABS module, and the suspect population was determined last November. The decision to conduct a recall was taken towards the end of April 2024.
