If you’re in the market for an off-road pickup truck in the mid-size segment, the Colorado ZR2 Bison may be up your alley. More hardcore enthusiasts, however, won’t settle for that but choose the Kymera.
Named after the Greek mythological creature Chimera, the one-off brawler from Fab Fours is an unsightly contraption that used to be a 2015 Colorado. The Chevy engine, however, is gone in favor of a 12-valve Cummins turbo diesel with not one but two turbochargers and ridiculous resources.
The 5.9-liter motor produces a little more than 650 horsepower (659 PS) and over-the-top torque from low in the rev range. As far as the transmission is concerned, the 47RH from the Dodge Ram HD is complemented by an Advanced Adapter Atlas 2 transfer case and AxleTech 4000 pneumatic lockers.
It took 10 months to finish this outrageously cool build, which boasts a low-range ratio of 3.8:1 and a crawl ratio of 52.60:1 according to Fab Fours. 20-inch custom wheels are wrapped in 405/70 Alliance Multiuse 550 tires, and the hydraulic steering system now features double-ended steering rams.
As you can tell from the following video from Barcroft Cars, “the whole point of Kymera is just to be over-the-top absurd. There's mild, wild, and then Kymera. It's just out of control,” said the head honcho, Greg Higgs. Both the front and rear axles are running 5.65 gears, and Fox 4.4 Factory Series Bypass Piggyback shocks do the heavy lifting when the trail gets rocky.
Fox 3.0 Factory Series coilovers, 2.0 Factory Series bump stops, Currie Antirock sway bars, and double-triangulated suspension also help the Kymera dominate whatever terrain you can imagine. The tricked-out ‘Rado also happens to be loud for the driver because the interior has been stripped down.
As for the finishing touch, well, take a look at those orange fins running down either side of the roof. But even more curiously, can you believe that this Frankenroader is entitled to wear a South Carolina plate?
