Recently, Hyundai Motor Company Australia sponsored the Nepean Police Area Command from New South Wales with a brand-new 2024 Hyundai Ioniq 6 electric vehicle. And no, New South Wales isn't a rebranding of the South Wales region from Great Britain. In fact, the case is far more interesting than that.
The Crime Prevention Unit is the lucky department that uses the Ioniq 6 during daily affairs. They even named it on the license plate: "EV COP." The Nepean Police's social media post thanked Hyundai Australia for their support by adding, "We appreciate Hyundai Motor Company Australia's commitment to supporting our efforts in maintaining public safety and community engagement."

Of course, people with access to the comment section already started with the usual EV inputs. One user said, "I can see this going the way of the British police when, during a pursuit, they run out of battery and just stop dead. Oh dear." Another user asked about the apparently missing red and blue lights, and another person responded, "They'd drain the battery." That's the extent of the irony, whereas the rest of the comment section had nothing but praise for the vehicle: "impressive," "beautiful car," or "love the number plate."

For better or worse, the ironic comments stop here because the social media manager limited the number of users who can leave a comment, writing, "Police have limited commenting on this post as the page is not being monitored at this time. Thank you for your understanding."

It's not shocking to find out that this isn't the first or last time an EV has become part of police enforcement agencies worldwide. A while back, Saudi Arabia started using Lucid Air models to this effect. Lucid and the Saudi Arabian have a contract to ensure 100,000 units over 10 years. Another example comes from Dubai Police, who use a Tesla Cybertruck.

When the 2024 Ioniq 6 isn't on police duty and takes off its EV COP badges, it has an MSRP of 37,500 US dollars for the SE Standard Range with a 53.0-kWh battery pack. It's RWD, it outputs 149 hp or 111 kW with 258 lb-ft (350 Nm) of torque and can hold a charge for an estimated 240 miles or 386 kilometers.

The 77.4-kWh RWD SE edition starts at around $42,500, produces 225 hp or 168 kW with 258 lb-ft (350 Nm) of torque, and can be driven for an estimated 361 miles or 581 kilometers. The AWD dual-motor SE version makes 320 hp (74 kW + 165 kW) but has a decreased range of 316 miles (508 km).

The 77.4-kWh RWD SEL variant starts at $45,250, and unlike the previous versions with 18-inch alloy wheels, it has 20-inch ones. It produces 225 hp or 168 kW with 258 lb-ft (350 Nm) of torque and can hold a 305-mile (490 km) charge. The AWD SEL with a dual-motor configuration delivers 320 hp (74 kW + 165 kW) with 446 lb-ft or 605 Nm of torque and can travel for 270 miles or 434 kilometers, considerably less than the RWD.

The belle of the ball is the 77.4-kWh $50,150 Limited edition. The RWD produces 225 hp or 168 kW with 258 lb-ft (350 Nm) of torque and can ride for 305 miles, whereas the AWD (dual-motor) produces 320 hp (74 kW + 165 kW) and 446 lb-ft or 605 Nm of torque, with an estimated range of 270 miles (434 km).

From October 2024, the manufacturer will start producing the 2025 Ioniq 5 on US soil, at the new Metaplant America in Bryan County, Georgia. Hyundai's most awarded EV is the Ioniq 5, which begins at $41,800 for the SE Standard Range. The SE starts at $45,850, the SEL from $47,400, and the Limited edition begins at $53,500. There's also the $59,400 D100 Platinum Edition, which doesn't do much for the drivetrain, but the kids will be happy. The D100 was created to celebrate Disney's 100th birthday, so you'll find many thematic details of this nature.

Here are a few fun facts about New South Wales from Britannica online. If the region's name sounds a bit too on the nose, it's because back in the 1770s, the British established the first Australian colony there. Captain James Cook led the expedition, and upon "parking" their ships on the newfound southeastern coast, he claimed in the name of King George III, as you did back then.

The most interesting thing about New South Wales is that it's home to the oldest human remains discovered in Australia at the Mungo paleoanthropological site. They date back between 46,000 and 50,000 years ago.
