The new city cars from Daimler are pretty great. But ordering a German car, any German car, can be pretty expensive. That's why Smart has introduced two new versions of the 2015 Fortwo and Forfour that come only with basic features in order to keep costs down.
The two new models are available for order in Germany since yesterday (November 17th) and come with the same 61 HP (45 kW) 1-liter engine. It's the same 3-cylinder unit as before, but the output is down by 10 HP.

This enables the Fortwo to accelerate from 0 to 100 km/h (62 mph) in a pedestrian 15.6 seconds, while the Forfour gets there in 16.7 seconds. Both cars are supposed to reach 151 km/h (94 mph) top speed. The upside is that both are pretty cheap and even though they don't come with stop-start, the models return 4.5 l/100km (62.7 mpg UK) and 4.7 l/100km (60 mpg UK).

Prices start at €10,335 for the 2-door model or €10,995 for the 4-door model. That's a massive €1,950 discount over a standard Passion trim level model.

Both come with steel 16-inch wheels shod in 165/65 R15 5J tires instead of alloys. The wing mirrors are also unpainted and the interior is less colorful. But other than that, it's not that bad. Standard equipment still includes LED daytime running lights at the front, power windows, central locking and a monochrome screen in the dash with orange lighting.

It's worth a quick note that for the same money as this basic Smart, you could order basically every Dacia model, including the Duster, which starts at €10,690 in Basic German market form. Peugeot's city car, the equally new 108, starts at €8,900.
