The suburban Detroit company EcoMotors has signed a $200 million contract with a Chinese company to produce its newly developed piston-opposed two-stroker engine.
A manufacturing plant will be built in China’s Ahui province, that will have an 150,000-engines-per-year production capacity, starting with 2014.

The opposed piston engines are no new technology, since they date from early 1900’s, but they were not so popular.

The advantages of 2-stroke opposed piston engines are given by the fact that they make energy in a more efficient way, using less parts and having lower costs. They use two opposed pistons in every cylinder and don’t have a valve train or a cylinder head for example.

However, we won’t see these kind of engines equipping street cars too soon, as the producer said they were designed for generators or off-road and commercial vehicles, due to the typical oil-burning requirements of a two-stroker.
